Childhood testing is a big debate around the world. Why should a series of test really determine how smart children are? What about the children who are not good at testing, the ones who have testing anxiety? I do believe that children should be tested once a year to make sure they are receiving the proper education that they need to move on. I feel if we don’t do some kind of testing then children might stop caring and wont try because they know they get to move on anyway. I just don’t think that the test for these kids should take weeks to so and all day for them to take the tests. Sometimes I wonder what kind of development issues they might be bringing by asking kids 6-7 sit in a chair for hr’s taking a test.
“In England, the government is consulting on whether to bring in what it calls a "simple baseline check" at the start of reception, from which children's progress could be measured for league table and Ofsted inspection purposes. It would also show parents what progress their children made in the early years of primary school, it says” (2 September 2013).  After reading this I though that this is a great way for teacher and there parents to see things are going with their child and to see were there child need to grow into be able to pass the class. I just feel as though a test can’t judge a person ability of there learning. I don’t know about the rest of  you but I have never been good at test and I always second guess myself and it just never turns our great for me. I can see who other children might think the same way as I do.
I also feel as though the more and more we start testing these young kids and labeling them, it could start hurting there self-esteem. I remember being in school and if I got a lower grad that my peers I would feel bad about myself. I also remember my peers would ask me what I got and I would lye to them because I didn’t want them to think I was stupid. I feel as though with test always telling student how mart they are not it just hurts there self-esteem and could make kids stop trying so hard on there education. I also think that children until they reach middle school should not all be about education I think this is a great opportunity for children to better the communication skills and gross and fine motor skills. Kids learn these thing the best when they are playing with there own peers themselves. Overall just think a child should be determine there future my some few test. People should be looking at the child as a whole person in development not just what they can remember from what there teacher had taught them.

  1. Amber, Thank you for sharing our struggle with test taking. I know of very good students who have been held back from graduation until they pass a portion of a standardized test.I don't feel the system is working despite the immense amount of class time spent teaching to the test. I fear our children will learn less and less if this continues.
